SOLDERLESS A-SERIES HACK

Have you ever wanted to make your own playstation Arcade Stick but you don't know how to solder? Then this hack is for you. During the course of this tutorial I will show you how to hack a Sony Dual Shock A-Series pad without having to solder a thing.
Materials:
  • Sony Playstation Dual Shock Controller Series-A
  • 26 gauge solid tined copper wire
  • Cable Tie

Dual Shock Series-A?

You may be asking yourself, “how do I tell which controller is a Series-A?” If you look at the back of the controller it will have a model number and a series number on it. Some of the most common series are the H and M series. For this hack though you will want one that says A. If you want to be absolutely sure that you’re buying the right controller, look for one of the translucent colored joysticks. Look on the back and look through it to see if you can see the circuit board inside. If you can see the Ribbon Terminal shown in the picture on the circuit board then you are buying the right controller.

Opening the Controller

Ok so now I have this A-Series controller but how do I get it open? If you look on the back of the controller you will see about 7 small screws. Use a small philips head screwdriver to unscrew the back of the controller and take it apart. After you’ve opened the controller there should be one small screw holding the circuit board in the joystick. Remove this screw and the circuit board should easily lift out of the controller case.

Removing the Motors and Analog stick Caps

The Analog stick Caps are just wasting space in your joystick. They should easily lift right off. To remove the Motors either cut their wires with some scissors or bend the wires back and forth until the exposed part of the wire snaps.

Cutting the Ribbon Circuit Board

The Ribbon Circuit Board should easily pull right out of the terminal on the main Circuit Board. Remove the Ribbon and cut it like shown in the picture. Then place the small piece back into the Terminal. This piece will provide the pressure needed to hold your wires in the terminal.

Inserting Your Wires into the Ribbon Terminal

If your using 26 gauge solid wire you should have no problem inserting your wires into the Ribbon Terminal one at a time. When inserting your wires make sure that none of the wire is exposed on the outside of the terminal. If any of the open wire is exposes. Use some scissors to cut the open wire shorter and re insert it. The Black wire shown in the picture is the ground wire.

Stress Relief

To Prevent you from accidentally pulling one of the wires off of the Circuit Board it is recommended that you wrap the wires around the Circuit Board twice and then tie them togther with a cable tie.

From this point on proceed to connect your wires to your buttons and joystick using quick disconects.
